A look at the winners of the Design-Prize / Sinks without funky extravagance

Design is a central theme in the natural stone branch which is why we have combed through the Red Dot Awards webpage for marble, granite, and related materials. The highly coveted design award is distributed by jurors for product submissions competing for best functionality, form and sustainability in a number of categories. Not only household items but also concepts for communication are eligible.

We drew three conclusions from our research.

First there were no natural stone products among the prize winners – possibly because there were no submissions.

The engineered stones Dekton XGloss by Cosentino and Techlam Strattos by Levantina in contrast were awarded prizes (see link below).

Second: much of that which natural stone designers conceive would probably never win a Red Dot Award. We show photos of award-winning submissions for ceramic skinks: unspectacular shapes with high functional value. Natural stone designers in contrast tend to make a big fuss about their work – sometimes not producing product design in stone but l’art pour l’art or in other words, nonsense.

And finally, natural stone is considered a noble material worldwide. This is documented by Red Dot’s new Interior-Design-Category which judges entire interior furnishing concepts. Note that almost all award-winners use natural stone for flooring on wall cladding. We show some of the objects.

Submissions are, as is the norm for such competitions, bound to fees. But the jury’s qualification is undisputable as is the high market value of the award and participation.
