Briefly noted

(June 2013) In Siena visitors are invited to view the loft of the Marble Cathedral until October 27th and admire the interior as well as the breath-taking view over the rooftops of the city. The opportunity arises thanks to construction work currently under way.  

Latest news: MS Africa & Middle East is a new stone fair to take place in Cairo, Egypt in December 9 – 12, 2013 for the first time. Organizer is Veronafiere (Marmomacc, Samotec) which hopes to better penetrate African and Middle Eastern markets. Partners are Art Line, an Egyptian fair organiser, ExpoLink, the Egyptian Exporters Association, the Italian Association of Construction Equipment & Attachment Companies (Unacea) and Confindustria Marmomacchine.  

For the Tucker Architectural Design Awards 2014 by the Building Stone Institute the call for Entries was released.

Engineered Corian Stone was the material chosen by Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects for the façade of Brørup Savings Bank in Denmark’s Fredericia.

The fact that open book compositions in natural stone can be integrated in outside walls was successfully demonstrated by Elis Rio Arquitectos of Mexico. They integrated an eye-catching combination of marble slabs as special accents in a concrete façade.    

Thin stone, i.e. stone less than 1 cm thick, now has competition from the ceramic industry: Spanish Company The Size presents Neolith in a thickness of 8 mm and available in sizes up to 3.70 m.

In Amsterdam the Rijksmuseum completed restoration of the Terrazzo mosaic flooring (1, 2).
