Name of the stone: Portland Bowers® Roach
Stone type: limestone
Colour: Creamy White
Quarry location: Isle of Portland, Dorset England
Description of the stone: Typical for the Bowers Roach are the shells of Turreted Gastropods (usually named “tower shells“ or “tower snails“) and bivalve shells from the Jurassic Era (about 200 – 140 million years ago). Aptyxiella portlandica reaching up to 50 mm length is the most prominent variety.
Peculiarities of the stone: It is an oolitic limestone almost completely made of millimeter-sized spheres of carbonate called ooids. That gives the stone a special durability and mechanical strength making it an ideal material for construction used for many centuries.
Application: Cladding, walling, paving and all internal applications.
Finishes: Typically rubbed to a 50 grit or 120 grit.
Certifications: ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, BES 6001 to the Excellent standard (only stone in the world to achieve this level), EPD (2024)
Frost resistant: Yes
