“Offcut Puzzle“ is the result of a collaboration between designer Marte Mei and the natural stone specialists at SolidNature, both from the Netherlands. The result is large-scale floor and wall coverings, as well as unusual furniture, made from leftover pieces from stone processing.

These are so-called functional sculptures, i.e., artistic objects that also serve a role as everyday objects (product design).

The color of the material is at the core of the design: earthy tones of limestone are combined with bold tones from the wild marble world.

This material diversity is further emphasized by the free forms of the individual pieces, which in turn emphasizes their origin from the waste heap. The press release refers to “imperfections“ – in reality, the adjacent pieces were carefully selected and tailored according to the designer’s design.

The collection was shown for the first time at the second edition of the “Matter and Shape“ trade fair during Paris Fashion Week, March 07-10, 2025, in the French capital. In addition to the floor coverings, which can be combined to form larger units, a bench and a coffee table were also on display.

The “Mark“ lamp, made of translucent onyx and based on a porcelain original by Marte Mei, was also on display.

“Matter and Shape invites exhibitors, large and small, to present exceptional projects and products in an elevated setting, celebrating the culture of global design today,” states the fair’s press materials.
