There are new tariffs from the US that once again affect Brazil’s natural stone sector. Unlike the punitive tariffs imposed at the end of July 2025, these are not explicitly directed against the South American country: Those tariffs had been imposed on Brazil because the country pursued legal proceedings against its controversial former president, Jair Bolsonaro. Trump had tried to avert the proceedings (see link below).
Now, there‘s a blow against the international furniture industry. A post on Trump‘s Truth Social channel on September 25 states: “We will be imposing a 50% tariff on all kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and associated products, starting October 1, 2025.”
The critical issue for the stone sector is the “bathroom vanities.“ Colorful quartzites from Brazil are very popular as a material for these in the US. Although they were exempt from the first punitive tariffs, they would now be affected if they arrived in the US cut to size or ready for installation on base cabinets.
The case illustrates the complete confusion that Trump has caused with his tariffs: For example, a backsplash made of Brazilian quartzite tiles on the wall behind a washbasin would not be affected by the new tariffs, however, the washbasin of Brazilian quartzite itself would be, if, as mentioned, it was cut to size in Brazil.
Complaints from US stone companies about the spreading general uncertainty have been heard frequently: “If you have informed yourself at a convention about the latest regulations, everything is completely different by the time you are checking in for your flight home,” said a representative of the US stone sector at a meeting of the Natural Stone Institute (NSI) back in May 2025.
Regarding Brazilian granites, the situation could also take a curious turn. They continue to be affected by the initial punitive tariffs: A third country could now buy these granites as raw blocks in Brazil, process them at home, and then deliver them to the US as finished products. The end consumers would pay have to the costs.
According to Truth Social, there are also new tariffs on upholstered furniture, in this case at a rate of 30 %.
Trump‘s social media channel cites the background for the measures: “The reason for this is the large scale ‘FLOODING‘ of these products into the United States by other outside Countries. It is a very unfair practice, but we must protect, for National Security and other reasons, our Manufacturing process.”
