Quarries‘ location: today mainly in the Valpolicella valley at the municipalities of Sant‘Ambrogio and Monte, about 20 km north of Verona.
Description of the stone: The Rosso Verona has been quarried since Roman times. Highlights in today’s Verona are the Arena amphitheater and the paving in large parts of the city center. These streets demonstrate the stone’s durability and the atmospheric quality of the its patina. In Venice, the Rosso Verona for St. Mark’s Basilica is famous, to name one more site.
Peculiarities of the stone: The stone was formed during the Jurassic era through underwater sedimentation on the then-Trento Plateau. Samples may have fossil ammonite shells. The red color comes from iron (Hematite).
