A world first, life-sized marble Triceratops skull sculpture is on show for two years in Mayfair, part of London‘s City of Westminster. The artwork was created by acclaimed British artist Paul Vanstone in collaboration with gallery David Aaron Ltd, focused on natural history and antiquities. It is now on display in Berkeley Square as part of the Berkeley Square Public Art Programme, bringing natural history into the heart of London for the local community and visitors to experience for free.
The species, living millions of years ago in today‘s North America, is one of the best-known dinosaurs, with its spectacular three horns and the frill on the adults‘ skulls. Its body form can be compared to a giant rhinoceros with 9 m length and 10 t weight.
Carved from a single 10-tonne block of white Carrara marble, the spectacular figurative work, titled “Carrara Triceratops Skull, 2025“, is an artistic interpretation (3,20 m x 2,20 m x 1,50 m) of the animal. Positioned at the north end of the Square, the sculpture replaces the much-loved bronze juvenile Tyrannosaurus Rex that previously occupied the site.
Vanstone created the new work over 60 days and took inspiration from a 68-million-year-old sub-adult Triceratops Skull exhibited by David Aaron at Frieze Masters 2025.
The collaboration between the gallery and the sculptor unites natural history with contemporary art. Vanstone, a former assistant to Anish Kapoor, is celebrated for transforming monumental stone into works of extraordinary presence and sensitivity. “I wanted to portray the creatures‘ great scale and power,“ he says.
Jonathan Aaron, Director of David Aaron adds: “This installation serves to promote public access to art and the wonders of the prehistoric natural world in Westminster’s Berkeley Square.“
About David Aaron Gallery: Originally established in 1910 in Iran, the gallery rose to prominence in the 1920s, opening additional showrooms in Alexandria, Egypt, and later in London.
