“The atmosphere is amazing,” says Swiss architect Jeannette Geissmann in the first episode of the new video and podcast series “Natural Stone Conversations in the Quarry.” Together with civil engineer Christoph Angehrn, and moderated by Christian Bärlocher, the three met in the Bärlocher company’s quarry to discuss the possibilities of natural stone as a modern building material.
The location was well chosen, even if the temperatures were a bit chilly. But the atmosphere in a quarry is quite special because it confronts people with the grandeur of nature. We recall a casual remark by Hans-Jakob Bärlocher, who recently handed the company over to his son Christian: “When I have architects or other clients in the quarry, I sell the stones.”
The first episode focused on current issues surrounding planning and building with natural stone. The guests, all experienced experts, offered their assessments of how natural stone will shape Swiss building culture in the future.
“One thing was clear even before the first Stone Conversation: Young, modern architects are rediscovering this timelessly beautiful and innovative building material,” according to the press release from the Pro Natural Stone Association.
The target audience for the marketing initiative was Swiss construction professionals: The discussion was conducted in Swiss German or Swiizerdütsch, a dialect understood only to a limited extent even by German-speaking neighbors.
