The EU-wide tender is open until January 21, 2021 / The listed natural stone paving shall be renewed

The Gendarmenmarkt in the center of Berlin is to be renovated. The project includes the natural stone paving with its distinctive square pattern of mosaic stones and larger granite slabs. The Europe-wide tender is open until January 21, 2021. Works could begin in May 2021.

According to the tender, the aim is a “tourism-oriented renovation“, i.e. an adaptation to the needs of major events such as the Classic Open Air Festival or the Christmas Market, among others.

However, the historic look is to be preserved. “The existing natural stone pavements will be restored as far as possible. The types and formats of the slabs and paving mosaics will be adapted to the traffic requirements due to the use of the square for big events,“ the tender states.

The Gendarmenmarkt, named after a regiment of Prussian troops, is often called the most beautiful square in Berlin. Its paving is reminiscent of the checkerboard pattern of the then newly created district named Friedrichstadt that is now part of the Berlin city center.
