Raw natural stone blocks were a frequent topic at the Casa Cor 2024 interior design trade fair in Fortaleza, in the Brazilian state of Ceará. Francisco (“Chico“) Fraias Adeodato, a local stonemason, also took on the challenge. The dedicated tinkerer was tasked with building a bar with a solid base that could be transported and installed on the upper floors of a residential building without the need for a crane and despite narrow access routes.

He has often come up with unusual solutions. At the 5th Fortaleza Brasil Stone Fair in 2020, we reported on his super-thin limestone, which, along with its supporting layer, could be bent like a cloth.

For the Casa Car, Chico Adeodato decided to cut the elongated raw block into strips from the side. Except for the end pieces, which remained intact, the strips were then reduced to their outer edges.

They were reassembled using screws.

This reduced the block’s original weight of one ton by a third. The individual parts could also be transported through narrow stairwells or corridors.

Screwed together to form the block, the structure offered sufficient stability to securely place a long stone slab on top.

The piece of furniture attracted a great deal of interest at Casa Cor. It now stands in the client’s home.
