The DNV association does not expect a trend reversal in the construction industry until 2025

The year 2023 was a year of recession in the construction industry worldwide. This was clearly reflected in the figures for the natural stone industry: almost all major exporters recorded -10% or even more, and Germany also achieved these values in its current statistics for imports and exports and for domestic consumption of natural stone. As a reminder: over the last few decades, the country had achieved annual increases of +6% in domestic consumption and most recently landed at €600 million.

We show the figures from the DNV association.

However, the negative figures for most export countries are probably not an indication of a sustained downward trend. For many countries, the trend has already reversed again in the first half of 2024.

For Germany, however, the Natural Stone Association DNV does not expect a trend reversal until 2025. In its annual report for 2023, it cites the current spring report of the German economic research institutes: “Falling interest rates, sharply rising incomes, and stagnating construction prices should then initiate the turnaround and cause construction investments to rise again in 2025 for the first time since 2020.“

The DNV’s 2023 annual report also covered gravestones. The working group on this topic stated:
* During the Corona pandemic, demand for local gravestones was very good. Now stonemasons are using more imported stones from Asia again;
* the increasing number of urn burials, anonymous burials and alternative forms of burial continue to lead to a significant reduction in the demand for gravestones;
* there is also discussion about an impending lifting of the general cemetery requirement in Germany. It is therefore all the more important to emphasize the value of cemeteries as protected places of mourning and to design them in such a way that they radiate a pleasant atmosphere and continue to be accepted.
