“Ride on Design“ is the motto of the Italian company Ciclotte, and they live up to it with their exercise bike: It has a futuristic design and is also available in a version with chic natural stone.
Can we actually simply call this object a “home trainer“? After all, it’s not just intended for physical exercise, but also for self-expression, or rather, self-affirmation, within one’s own four walls.
As is typical with a bicycle, its core is an open circle. In most versions, this frame is made of steel, supports a seat and pedals for the athlete, and also a type of carbon handlebar, which in itself is a very special design idea.
The construction of the exercise bike with marble is slightly modified: There is no steel frame; instead, a marble disc stands in the otherwise open circle. However, it is not load-bearing; Stability is achieved by the fact that it consists of two layers and has a steel disc in the middle.
The company is based in Bergamo, and the manufacturer is Multi-Design Srl at the same location.
Four Italian marble types with striking colors (white, black, green, red) are used, along with cream-colored travertine.
The stone discs are one centimeter thick, as the total weight of all variants is only 86 kg. The user is permitted to bring a maximum of 118 kg of his/her own weight (in the EU, the USA, and China).
Some technical accessories can be added, such as mounts for mobile phones or tablets and connected sensors, for example, for measuring cadence.
Luca Schieppati is the designer. The idea goes back to his technical study Ciclò, which is on display at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan. Other references include unicycles, popular with artists and children, or the high-wheelers, which flourished from the 1870s to the 1890s.
