Serpentine Galleries in London presents “Giuseppe Penone: Thoughts in the Roots“ through September 07, 2025. It is he most comprehensive institutional exhibition of Penone’s practice in London, featuring sculptures and works from 1969 to today.

He was a leading figure in the Arte Povera movement which was born in Italy in the 1960s celebrating the simplicity of natural materials and artistic techniques.

Penone experimented with a wide range of materials including wood, iron, wax, bronze, terracotta, marble and plaster, bringing their individual physical qualities to the fore.

The work “Idee di pietra“ (Ideas of Stone) we show is part of a series in which the artist explored the relationship between river stones and human thought process. Large river stones of varying shapes and sizes were placed on the forks of the bronze tree branches.
