The Finisterrae Restaurant on the Piazza Santa Croce near the Cathedral of Florence is also known as the Mediterranean Restaurant: the various rooms are decorated in the style of famous coastal cities and special regional dishes are served to correspond. Recently the Caffetteria Fiorentina has been added – a typical Coffee Bar in Florentine style. Architects Mimesi 62 Architetti Associati have managed to capture the local flair and celebrities in local stone.
Strips of Giallo Avorio limestone run horizontally along the walls. Its hue and silk matt surface emanates an atmosphere of warmth. The names Florentine Quattrocento masters are routed into the stone hap-hazardly.
The decor may be reminiscent of department store shelving or medicine racks in a drug store making one instinctively want to open a drawer and find out what’s inside behind the names.
The stripes reflect the horizontal lines of the room. In contrast, the suspended lighting draws thin perpendicular lines.
The flooring is coved in Pietra Forte Fiorentina sandstone well suited for the job thanks to its unusual hardness. Both Giallo Avorio limestone and the Pietra Forte Fiorentina sandstone originate from the area and were provided by Il Casone Company.
