Stellar objects revolving around their axis and circling one another is the motif behind the „Lunar Collection“ by Lara Bohinc in cooperation with British Lapicida. These are 3 tables „Sun and Moon“, „Full Moon“, and „Half Moon“ respectively.
Bohinc was inspired by the ancient technique of Pietra Dura and Opus Sectile whereby thin slabs of colored natural stone are affixed to a carrier resulting in a type of painting in stone.
The Lunar Collection is somewhat more abstract but the stone is never-the-less quite colorful and comprises exclusive types. The banding is made of gold plated steel or brass.
Note the side table „Full Moon“, strongly reminiscent of the planet Saturn with its ring, a constant reminder of the vastness of our cosmos.
Already in 2014 Lara Bohinc had worked together with Lapicida on the theme of celestial bodies. The table „Solaris“ (below) with rotating table tops was the result. The 100 cm-diameter table measures 175 cm when extended to full length. The limited 10 piece edition comes with a price tag of £24,000.
Fans of Stanislaw Lem’s science fiction novel „Solaris“ will remember: there is a living ocean on a distant planet which takes over the memory of astronauts thus gaining control over them.
